The All Member Exhibition October 2023

I have been a member of the storied Woman's Art Club of Cincinnati since 2008. It is a wonderful organization that has been the longest running Womans Art Club in the USA, started in 1892. Every year they host juried shows and exhibits for the members. The "All Member Exhibition", is the current exhibit for October 2023 exhibited in the Main Gallery at The Barn in Mariemont. All of the members of the Woman's Art Center bring one piece of their work for this exhibit. This year the show has a wide variety of pieces, from oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, fibers, jewlry, and mosaics. Showing Monday - Friday, 10 am to 2 pm and Saturday and Sunday 1-4 pm until the end of October, 2023. For more information, check out the www.artatthebarn.org.
" Study for Model Resting"
is my entry for the All Member Exhibition this year. This was intended to be a study for a larger painting. I enjoyed painting the reflections on the copper pot and silver pot. The cool tones of tea pot and silver bowl created a nice contrast against the warmth of the background and the warm wood side table. The figure and the face of the figure are very rough, recording only notes of shadows and highlights, as this is a study and not intended to be a completed painting. Many masters and current contemporay artists use the method of creating studies before starting the actual paintng. Studies are useful to the determine the compostion, the color balance and the movement of the painting. However I enjoyed the freshness of the quick studies and the energy of the brushstroke at this stage. What becomes a challenge is keeping the freshness of the study once the move is made to make the larger painting.
What are your thoughts on this painting, and if you are an artist, have you employed the method of making studies?
