Mayor Donald Shanks, Mariemont Ohio,
oil on canvas, Deborah Ridgley
Portrait commissions can be created in a variety of mediums: oils, pastels, or monochromatic medium. Regardless of the medium, portraits are designed to last for generations, and your portrait commission becomes an enduring legacy.
The process of a portrait commission begins with an initial meeting with the artist and client. We will review portfolios, discuss the clients needs and requirements including fees. Fees depend largely on the size of the piece. Portrait sizes are based upon whether the subject is a head and shoulders, half figure, three-quarters figure, or full figure. There are additional fees for more than one figure in the painting.
Portraits normally present the subject life size but under life size may be requested. Oils are more costly than pastels and charcoal. Please note that framing cost are additional, and the artist will happily assist the client in choosing the most suitable frame for the portrait.
Once a decision is made, artist and client will arrange a schedule for sittings. While most of the painting is working from life, photographs will be taken for reference for the completion of the portrait.
